Biography
Ratan Tata is an Indian businessman and philanthropist who is the chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group. He was the chairman of Tata Sons from 1991 to 2012.
Ratan Tata was born on December 28, 1937, in Bombay (now Mumbai), India. He is the son of naval officer and businessman Naval Tata, who was adopted by the family of Jamsetji Tata, the founder of Tata Sons. Ratan Tata received his Bachelor of Science degree in architecture with structural engineering from Cornell University in 1962.
After returning to India, Ratan Tata joined the Tata Group in December 1962. He started his career at Tata Steel and worked in various capacities at Tata Industries, Tata Chemicals, and Tata Motors. In 1991, he was appointed as the chairman of Tata Sons, succeeding his uncle, J.R.D. Tata.
